Mid-Continent Instruments Donates Directional Gyro to AOPA’s “Win-A-Six-in-‘06” SweepstakesWICHITA, Kan. — Mid-Continent Instruments is contributing a 4305-150 directional gyro for the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) “Win a Six in ’06 Sweepstakes.” Manufactured by the General Design division of Mid-Continent Instruments, this DG is based on their popular military and airline gyros that are known for durability and long service life. The model 4305 features a high inertia, long-life gyro spin motor and oversize gimbal bearings that withstand high vibration environments. It is conservatively rated at 8,000 hours MTBF (Mean Time Between Failure). As the only gyro designed specifically for modern Electronic Horizontal Situation Indicators (EHSI), which require a high-resolution digital heading signal, it provides accurate heading reference and stabilization for the popular Sandel SN3500 EHSI system. A unique feature of the 4305 is an integral spin motor speed sensor. It detects true rotation speed for use with failure warning devices and system diagnostics. Each year companies donate instruments and services to renovate the aircraft AOPA plans to use for their sweepstakes. The winner of this annual AOPA event will receive a fully refurbished 260-horsepower 1967 Piper Cherokee Six valued at $200,000. The aircraft’s restoration process includes a complete engine overhaul, cowl and wheel pants that add about 10 knots to the original cruise speed, avionics upgrade, and a new panel that many visitors are using as a model for own panel plans. The Six has made stops at various shows along the way, allowing visitors to view its development. It can be seen at the EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wisconsin from July 24th-30th before making its final stop at the AOPA Expo in Palm Springs, California during November 9th-11th.
