Replacing Your KX 155 with the New KX 200: A Closer Look at the Honeywell KX 200
August 3, 2024
If you're dealing with an aging KX 155 unit in your aircraft, you're not alone. Many aviators are finding it increasingly difficult to source replacement parts for these older models, and the cost of repairs is on the rise. Fortunately, there's a straightforward solution that will be available soon. The new Honeywell KX 200 radio is a drop-in replacement for the KX 155.
Understanding the Honeywell KX 200
The Honeywell KX 200 is a navigation and communication system developed to meet the practical needs of today’s pilots. This compact unit reduces cockpit clutter and streamlines operations. The KX 200 also provides dependable performance for a range of aircraft, from small private planes to commercial jets.
Replacing your KX 155 with the KX 200
Important Note: Only an FAA licensed mechanic (A&P) can perform the removal of the KX 155 and the installation of the KX 200.
-
Power Down and Remove the KX 155
Start by cutting power to your unit. Then, unscrew and remove the old KX 155 from its tray connector. Using a 3/32” Allen wrench, turn the locking screw counterclockwise until the KX 155 disconnects from the mounting rack. Pull on the metal tabs located behind the front panel on each side of the KX 155 and pull it out of the mounting rack. -
Prepare the KX 200
The KX 200 comes with a special adapter plate that allows it to fit directly into the existing slot. This adapter accommodates both 14-volt and 28-volt systems, so you'll need to specify your voltage when ordering. The unit itself is versatile, with a voltage range of 11 to 32 volts. -
Install the KX 200
Once the old unit is removed, make sure the front lobe of the hold-down device is in vertical position. Slide the KX 200 into place until the front lobe touches the mounting rack. Then, using the Allen wrench, engage the locking screws through the hole in the front panel. Turn the screen clockwise until the rear lobe engages with the mounting rack. Continue turning until the unit is secure. Do not overtighten. Once the KX 200 is in place, reconnect the power. The KX 200 is designed to integrate with your current setup, including glideslope functionality, if your aircraft is equipped with it. -
Power Up and Test
After installation, apply power to the unit. The KX 200 should power up immediately, and you can start familiarizing yourself with its features. The interface is user-friendly, with push-and-turn controls.
Once the A&P mechanic has installed your new unit, they will complete a logbook entry. You do not need to obtain a Supplemental Type Certificate (STC).If you have any questions or need further assistance, our Mid-Continent Instruments and Avionics Field Service Engineers are available to help.
