Emergency Locator Transmitters (ELTs)
In an emergency, an Emergency Locator Transmitter (ELT) provides the fastest link to Search and Rescue (SAR) services. The beacons feature built-in GPS for precise location data, long-life batteries, and remote panel-mounted activation switches. Each unit ships with a new battery pack and instructions for registration. Proper registration links your beacon's unique signal to your aircraft, providing rescuers with critical information.
The COSPAS-SARSAT satellite system, which coordinates international search and rescue, no longer monitors the 121.5 MHz frequency. Modern 406 MHz beacons transmit a unique digital ID code and, if GPS-equipped, precise location data directly to this satellite network. This enables a rapid and targeted response.
Per FAR 91.207(c), ELT batteries must be replaced when:
- The transmitter has been in use for more than 1 cumulative hour
- 50% of the battery's useful life has expired
Kannad ELTs have a battery life of 6.5 years from new or replacement. The battery installation date is printed on the ELT’s label. The internal ELT battery can be tested separately during a periodic test. The battery voltage must be more than 8 VDC.
Installing an ELT is generally a more complex task that requires following specific, and often strict, aviation authority regulations. Installation must be performed or supervised by a certified aviation mechanic.
To register your 406 MHz ELT, visit the NOAA website, find your beacon's 15-digit Hex ID on the device, and fill out the mandatory registration form online.
The registration process requires your contact information, aircraft details, and emergency contacts. This is crucial for Search and Rescue (SAR) to respond effectively in the event of an activation.
Yes, an ELT self-test uses a small amount of battery life and contributes to the device's cumulative usage. Every time the ELT is tested, the battery life is logged into the internal counter. Once the counter reaches 72 or more tests, or when 50% of the useful life has expired, the ELT battery must be replaced.
